Bordeaux 2019 is back in focus following the Union des Grand Crus de Bordeaux’s annual tasting in London last week, where both the critics and trade had a first taste of the wines in bottle.
One of the more successful En Primeur campaigns of recent years
The 2019 vintage was released when most of Europe was in lockdown. In a time of great uncertainty and considerable financial stress, the En Primeur campaign grabbed the market’s attention and proved a surprising success on many levels.
Overall, the vintage offered high quality wines at attractive prices. The 2019s were released at a 21% average discount to the 2018s, with some châteaux offering price cuts of up to 31%.
Critic scores placed 2019 as the best vintage of the decade while the global trade reported higher sales volumes than for the successful 2018 campaign. And for the first time in years, an active secondary market developed, with some 2019s trading at a premium on release.

How have the wines performed since release?
So far in 2021, the 2019 vintage has not been very active on the secondary market. It has seen less trade than most other vintages released since the noughties, including the 2020.
However, the most traded 2019 wines by value have been Château Pavie, Château Haut-Brion, Château Cheval Blanc, Château Beychevelle and Château La Mission Haut-Brion, all of which were met with strong demand upon release.
Moreover, the prices of some 2019s have already risen. The top-performing wines can be seen in the chart below.
Château Mouton Rothschild, which offered one of the most considerable discounts upon release, is up 39%. The wine received a potential 100-points from Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, James Suckling, Jeff Leve and Chris Kissack.
Where is the value?
While some wines have made steady gains, many highly scored 2019s remain available at their release prices. Moreover, they offer even better value for money than other vintages from the s 15 vintages currently available, the 2019 is one of the highest scoring vintages with the lowest Market Price.
